A Day In the Life of A Hollywood Costume Designer

Molly Rogers is the costume designer to the stars, her name may not be immediately familiar, but we bet you’ve heard of the films Second Act, Sex and The City 2, The Devil Wears Prada, Ugly Betty and The Bourne Identity? Well Molly is the brains behind the costumes.

What’s your typical morning routine …

I am an early riser due to years of early set calls! (in film you are usually chasing the sun). I roll out with the day’s shopping and fittings on my mind. A bath with oils starts me out on the right side of the bed, followed by a quick bowl of oatmeal. When it comes to getting dressed, I wear sneakers for the long work days and I love anything with pockets, even a ball gown. I usually commute to office with Pat field in her vintage t-bird.

As a costume designer I’m responsible for…

The overall look and feel of each character’s costumes throughout the film. Each film starts with gathering inspiration, this could be from the streets of NYC, and I love Instagram because it opens up the world to me. For Second Act I prepared moodboards of costume ideas to pitch the concept to the amazing director, Peter Segal. Then once it’s signed off it’s important to crew up with the best wardrobe people and set up the department.

Describe a day on the set of Second Act…

A day on the set of Second Act immediately felt very familiar because our office was at Silvercup Studios, where we spent years shooting SEX AND THE CITY….Silvercup was our second home! There are so many moving parts in a costume department: accountant, production assistants, tailors, and you need to be able to manage them all. It needs to be a well-oiled machine because you spend so much time together – you want to avoid a dysfunctional family!

You work really closely with the actors, and get all of their sizes and start to pull clothing for their first fittings. Every day you need to use the costume breakdown from your wardrobe supervisor and set out the clothing you have been preparing that is appropriate for the scene and character.

What is it like working with Hollywood Actors…

It was amazing to work with Jennifer Lopez on Second Act. She’s so friendly and charismatic, with a laser beam focus on what she needed to do in order to portray her character Maya, from Queens. As she was not only starring in the film but producing it as well, she’s really business-minded and had great thoughts and notes on the supporting cast, including Vanessa Hudgens, who was a huge inspiration as well! Both were dreams to work with!

How I got the job…

After I graduated from UNC-CH (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) with a bachelor in psychology, (which, believe me, comes in handy) I ran to London to discover the music scene, falling in love with music and fashion. After returning to NYC in the 80’s, where I got a job at Pat Fields clothing store on 8th Street, which is where it really began. Fast forward a few months later and I was working for Pat in the costume department, managing the showgirl headpieces on the TV series True Crime in Las Vegas.

My “pinch me moment” during my career was…

Was having Meryl Streep’s wig held up for me in order to clasp a Fred Leighton necklace on her during the shooting of ‘THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA.” WTH! That was a costume designer’s out of body experience!

The hardest part of my job is…

Artistic differences!

The greatest part of my job is…

Every day is a surprise!

In my downtime I like to…

Relax in Miami while I work on my book.

If I wasn’t a costume designer, I’d be a……

…better friend! It’s very consuming xoxoxoxo

Second Act is a comedy in the vein of Working Girl and Maid In Manhattan. Jennifer Lopez stars as Maya, a 40-year-old woman struggling with frustrations from unfulfilled dreams. Until, that is, she gets the chance to prove to Madison Avenue that street smarts are as valuable as book smarts, and that it is never too late for a Second Act.

Second Act is in cinemas on January 25th
